QueryWell vs the alternatives
Oracle's native tools are capable but IT-bound. Most rivals are SQL editors sold by the year. QueryWell is an audit-evidence workbench you buy once: SHA-256-fingerprinted exports, 82 ITGC scripts, local-first data (stays on your device by default) and a perpetual licence. Here's where each option stops — and where QueryWell fits.
What we're comparing. QueryWell is an audit-evidence workbench — not a BI platform, so this isn't about dashboards or report distribution. It's the evidence, data-residency and ownership job that reporting platforms don't solve.
| Capability | QueryWell | OTBI / BI Publisher | SplashBI | Orbit / insightsoftware |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SHA-256 fingerprinted exports | Yes — logged and re-verifiable in-app | Not built-in | Not advertised | Not advertised |
| ITGC script library | 82 scripts mapped to controls, bundled | Build manually | Add-on packs | Add-on packs |
| Where report data lives | On your machine by default (Studio) | Fusion tenant | Often a managed cloud layer | Cloud / your warehouse |
| Adds a separate data layer | No (Studio) / optional governed mirror (Data Loader) | No | Commonly | Commonly |
| Mirror into a DB you own | Yes — Data Loader with governance registry | Via BICC/BIP scheduled jobs | Varies by deployment | Varies by deployment |
| Scheduled, unattended refresh | Yes — tray-resident, incremental on real FKs | IT-scheduled BIP jobs | Platform-managed | Platform-managed |
| Commercial model | Perpetual + optional SLA | Bundled with Fusion | SaaS subscription | SaaS / term licence |
| You own the software | Yes | N/A | Typically no | Typically no |
| Free-form SQL | Yes | Limited / IT-built | Pre-built packs | Pre-built + builder |
| Three-year cost (single seat) | £1,200 (£1,680 with support SLA) | Within Fusion | Recurring | Recurring |
Comparison reflects each tool's primary documented deployment model. Specific editions, versions and customer configurations vary — many third-party platforms can be deployed in more than one way. Treat this as a positioning guide, not a per-edition technical statement; we're happy to share the sources and product editions we compared. No subscription clock
Subscription platforms bill every year for as long as you use them. QueryWell is bought once and owned outright, with support and upgrades as an optional annual add-on.
No added data layer
Studio keeps results on the device and, when you need a governed copy, mirrors it into a database you already own. AI processing follows the endpoint you select.
No IT queue
Free-form SQL against live data, instead of waiting on IT-built reports or pre-packaged content.
What a technical team actually reaches for
Set the platforms aside for a moment. When someone just needs to get data out of Fusion, these are the real options — and where each one stops.
OTBI / BI Publisher
Native and free, but IT-bound: limited ad-hoc SQL, a subject-area wall, no built-in audit toolkit and no hashed export trail. QueryWell runs on the same BI Publisher surface — without the friction. See the BI Publisher alternative.
Excel add-ins
More4apps, GL Wand and the like are per-seat annual subscriptions, tied to Excel, with no free-form SQL and no governed mirror into your own database. QueryWell is bought once and does both.
Desktop SQL tools
Toad and SQL Developer can't even connect — Fusion Cloud exposes no SQL*Net or JDBC to the database. QueryWell reaches Fusion through BI Publisher, which is the supported path for external SQL access.
Already run OAC, Tableau or Power BI? QueryWell isn't a BI tool and won't replace them — it's the query-and-evidence layer, and the Data Loader can feed the BI you already have. For the day-to-day question-and-answer work, see ad-hoc reporting.
QueryWell vs the direct rivals
SQLConnect, BI Connector, CloudMiner and FusionQuery all run SQL against Fusion through BI Publisher — the same surface QueryWell uses. Here's what sets QueryWell apart, and when a free driver is enough.
| Tool | Commercial model | What it's good at | What QueryWell adds |
|---|---|---|---|
| SQLConnect | Subscription — US$50/user/month or US$450/year (individual tier) | Mature editor, multi-pod connections, self-serve trial. SSO, IntelliSense and Git are enterprise-tier. | SHA-256 exports, 82-script ITGC toolkit, Data Loader, perpetual licence — no annual clock |
| BI Connector Developer | Subscription — about US$700/developer/year | IDE-style data-model authoring, Git integration, publishing back to BI Publisher, VS Code integration | Fingerprinted audit evidence, unattended scheduled mirrors, no subscription, one signed desktop app |
| CloudMiner | Subscription — about US$545/year | Multi-pod SQL with autocomplete and background querying. Native macOS app as of v7.7 (2 Oct 2026). | Owned outright, governance registry and audit ledger, Data Loader, tamper-evident exports |
| FusionQuery | Subscription — US$249/year | Entry-level SQL editor, affordable for small teams | ITGC toolkit, SHA-256 evidence trail, Data Loader, buy-once model |
| OFJDBC and other free drivers | Free, open source (MIT) | Turns your SQL into BI Publisher calls inside DBeaver or IntelliJ; SSO and MFA sign-in; ideal for a technical consultant who wants an editor they already know | A supported product: signed installers, auto-update, curated query libraries, hashed evidence, governed replication, and someone to call |
Commercial models as published on each vendor's own site on 5 September 2026, in their published currency; editions, taxes and support terms vary, so check the vendor page before comparing totals. If your need is a plain SQL editor for one person, a free driver may be enough — and we will tell you so. QueryWell's £1,200 perpetual Studio seat is priced for audit-evidence workflows, governed replication and perpetual ownership — not for SQL editing alone. SQLConnect, BI Connector, CloudMiner, FusionQuery and OFJDBC are trademarks or projects of their respective owners.
The one you own
Local-first, audit-ready, and yours outright — without the warehouse, the pipeline, or the recurring bill.
